Stage set for All-Ireland Club Finals

Stage set for All Ireland Club Finals

Representatives of this year’s club finalists gathered at CrokeParkthis afternoon in advance of Sunday’s (March 4th) double header All Ireland finals fixture at GAA HQ.

Una Leacy of Oulart the Ballagh (Wexford) joined Mary Looby of Drom/Inch (Tipperary) and Intermediate finalists, Aileen Moore of Eoghan Rua (Derry) and Aoife Lynskey of Ardrahan (Galway).

Oulart the Ballagh face Drom/Inch in the senior decider at 3.00pm and at 1.00pm defending Intermediate champions Eoghan Rua play Ardrahan.

A number of established inter-county players, such as the Leacy sisters, Una and Mary, Ursula Jacob (Oulart-the Ballagh, Wexford) and Joanne Ryan of Drom/Inch will also be aiming to add an elusive All Ireland club title to their playing honours on Sunday.

Speaking at this afternoon’s photocall President of the Camogie Association Joan O’Flynn said:

“We are delighted to be back inCrokeParkfor this year’s All Ireland Club Finals as the venue adds extra prestige to a momentous sporting occasion.

The opportunity of winning an All Ireland club title is something that all club camogie players aspire to. An All Ireland title at any grade is a huge honour, but a club All Ireland title is extra special because it is at club level where a player’s camogie career begins, where lifelong friendships are formed and where lasting bonds are created.

Clubs are an integral part of rural and urban communities and in many cases are the epicentres of activity in the area. Sunday’s double header finals will be a huge celebration of sport and also a demonstration of true community spirit in action as supporters rally to the cause.”

Wexford side Oulart the Ballagh recorded a convincing win over Antrim champions Loughgiel to book their final spot while a highly rated Drom/Inch side reached this year’s encounter following a superb win over champions Killimor in a re-fixed All Ireland semi-final on February 12th.

Defending Intermediate champions Eoghan Rua will be hoping to complete memorable back-to-back All Ireland wins but face a formidable challenge in Ardrahan, who defeated a strong Lismore side to reach this year’s decider.

This is the second year that the All Ireland Camogie Club Finals are taking place inCrokePark. The finals returned to theDublinvenue after a break of almost 40 years in 2011.

This year’s final also marks the return of Cáman & Run, a solo and handpass relay race in which four representatives from senior and junior schools compete at half time. In addition the All Ireland Junior club champions, Inagh will be honoured as well as the Volunteer of the Year Award recipients.

Ulster Launch of ‘A Game of Our Own’ and Honour Lily Spence and Rev Davies

On Monday 27th February, the Morgan Athletic Grounds will host the Ulster launch of the A Game of Our Own. The event will be cause for a double celebration as Ulster Camogie will also confirm our two new Honorary Vice President’s, Lily Spence of County Antrim and Rev. Dean Davies of County Down. Both Lily and Rev Davies have a wealth of experience and distinguished service to Camogie within the Province and this will be celebrated on the night

Written by Limerick native Mary Moran, A Game of Our Own: Camogie’s Story charts the development of the Association from its foundation in 1904 through to the present day. It contains a rich array of photographs and fantastic archival material, stretching back over many decades. Mary Moran will be in attendance on the night along with Uachtaran Cumann Camógaíochta Joan O’Flynn. At the recent Croke Park Launch, Joan commented

“When the Camogie Association was founded there were many challenges facing women, let alone women in sport. Our pioneering founders turned challenges into opportunities and were the first to establish a women’s Gaelic game.

The publication of A Game of Our Own: Camogie’s Story documents, for the first time, a distinctive and national narrative of the players, teams and games that have absorbed generations.

The production of a book like A Game of Our Own: Camogie’s Story shows how much was achieved through the amazing and unstinting work of volunteers. Our more recent history shows how much more that voluntary effort can achieve when it is supported by public policy including direct funding from the statutory authorities.

In the last decade, we have gone from strength to strength and government funding from the Irish Sports Council and Sport NI as well as commercial funding has been vital. It is crucial that such investment continues in order to allow more women to participate, and to reach the highest possible standards in camogie.”

The evening will begin at 7pm and light refreshments will be provided. There will also be the opportunity to purchase A Game of Our Own on the night, which will cost €25/£20. All are welcome

Ulster Camogie Convention 2012

On Sunday 22nd January, Ulster Camogie held their Annual Convention in the Ulster GAA offices in Armagh. With a good attendance on the day, a lively afternoon’s debate was on the cards.

In the Secretary’s report Breige McGilligan spoke of the year that Ulster Camogie had in 2011. There was plenty of action, both on and off the pitch. Breige highlighted successful events in Ulster such as the first ever Players Forum, Annual Congress being held in Belfast for the first time ever along with the appointment of an Administration Manager, which has been funded by Sport NI.

In 2011 Ulster had successes and narrow defeats at national level. Armagh led the way winning the Nancy Murray Cup, and an All-Ireland Minor title. Monaghan Camog’s won the All-Ireland Junior B title. Down U16’s also were victorious at national level with the Ulster Colleges All-Star team winning an historic All-Ireland Inter Provincial Championship. In Croke Park, both Antrim and Down were narrowly defeated at Intermediate and Junior Level. Here’s hoping both counties can go a step further in 2012.

All delegates in attendance were very proactive throughout the day, discussing all reports, and lively debate on the motions put forward. Uachtaran Tofa Aileen Lawlor took the delegates through the proposed rules changes and Ard Stiúrthóir Sinéad O’Connor informed all delegates on the One Club Model proposals that will be brought forward for all clubs to consider. Ulster Camogie were also lucky to have Ulster GAA Uachtaran, Aogán O’Fearghail on hand to speak of the increased relations between all GAA codes and how the One Club Model should benefit all clubs if that is the route that they would like to go down

At election time, there was only one change in office, Cavan delegate, Maura McGurren succeeded Catherine O’Hara as Leas Cathaoirleach. Catherine has stood down after many years of dedication to Camogie across the province and Ulster Camogie are eternally grateful to Catherine for all her work over this time. All officers are listed below:

  • Chairperson Kathleen Woods

Four Camogie clubs in Ulster were successful in receiving €9,000 in funding for from the Cumann Camogaíochta Capital Funding programme – the following Ulster clubs received grants from the programme: (Down) An Riocht Camogie Club, €3,000; (Tyrone) Derrylaughan Camogie Club, €2,500; (Antrim) Naomh Eanna GAA Club, €2,000; (Monaghan) Inniskeen Camogie Club, €1,500.

Speaking about the announcement President of the Camogie Association Joan O’Flynn:

“Assisting county board and club units to build and improve facilities to provide the best possible platform for the development and promotion of camogie is of paramount concern to the Association.

”

Despite the challenging economic circumstances, it is of significant importance that funding is made available to invest in our county and club units.

The applications to the Capital Funding Scheme were extremely competitive and of an impressive standard. It also provided an excellent snap shot of the huge commitment of volunteers at county and club level to promoting and developing camogie in their respective areas and the level of foresight and planning which goes into this.”

This once off Capital Funding Scheme was announced by President Joan O’Flynn at Congress 2011. Applications were invited from units at all levels of the Association.
